A long time basketball player, Martial began running track after his high school coach suggested he could also excel in track. He ran his first race in June and finished fifth at the Junior National Championships a month later. The only one in his family to run track, Martial wants to go down in track and field history as a top list sprinter. He has always looked up to HSI legends like Maurice Greene and wants to follow in their path.

Martial recently moved to the U.S. to focus on his speed and is continuously merging his French techniques with the ones he is learning in America. He finds controlling one's speed at the right moment as the most challenging and intriguing part of running. Martial looks forward to a great 2009 season and to improving his speed in the 100m.
