Byron Scott
Head Coach of NBA Cleveland Cavaliers
Coach Byron Scott has a history of turning around struggling NBA franchises. After a 14 year career as a player in the NBA, where he was a integral part of the “Showtime” Lakers and their 3 NBA championships, Scott's first head coaching assignment came in the 2000-2001 NBA season where he took over the flailing New Jersey Nets. In the two years preceding Scott's arrival in New Jersey the Nets had only managed to win a combined 51 total games (16 in '98-99 season and 31 in the '99-00 season). But within 2 years coach Scott had turned the franchise around. In the 2001-2002 season Scott lead the team to 52 victories, the first winning season for the franchise since 1993 and the most wins in a single season in franchise history, an Atlantic Division Championship and the Eastern Conference Championship. In just two years Coach Scott had taken one of the worst teams in the league and led them to the NBA Finals. He would repeat this feat the following season leading the Nets to their second consecutive NBA finals appearance. The Scott lead Nets were the first and only Nets teams to reach the NBA finals.
Following his 3 years with the Nets, Scott went on to coach the New Orleans Hornets in 2004. Tasked with rebuilding the team with a new crop of young players Scott met the challenge but it would not come without adversity. Before the start of the 2005-2006 season the city of New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. As a result the Hornets played the majority of their home games in Oklahoma City for the next 2 seasons. But in their return to New Orleans in the 2007-2008 season Coach Scott led the team to a 56-26 record, a divisional Championship and the second best record in the Western Conference, earning him Coach of the Year honors. Scott would go on to coach 2 more seasons with the Hornets.
Byron Scott is currently the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and has been, once again, tasked with turning the franchise around. With his track record, we have no doubt he will succeed in doing so.
